Reducing Shadow Noise

Bringing out shadow detail with two RAW conversions does not always work well because you will effectively be brightening dark areas and so they may well show unacceptable noise. It may well be beter to combine two exposures. One exposed for the highlights, but not blowing them. The other exposed for the shadows and allowing the highlights to burn out.

Not a great image, but it makes the point. The danger with this technique is that there may be too much movement between exposures and for best results it requires a tripod.
